3 iron

this movie has been critically acclaimed all over the world, giving jae hee his first major acting award as best new actor in 2004 blue dragon awards. playing the role as a homeless roaming around empty houses, eventually meeting up and falling in love with a battered wife... jae hee showcased a powerful performance rarely seen in his contemporaries....indeed 3 iron has paved the way for the next important actor in korea...

finally! I've seen 3 Iron...

here's my take on the movie...

I've never felt intrigued and mentally challenged in a movie before. This is the first and only movie that made me really think. Before watching this movie, I've heard that it was excellently executed by both Kim Ki Duk and the cast, truly it lived up to its expectations and more.

the Plot and more:

The storyline is simple yet profound. It's suspense, drama and romance all rolled into one masterpiece. It starts of with Tae Suk (Jae Hee) playing with his favorite toy, the golf and going to empty houses to live and stay at the moment. The introduction is a good start to this movie because it gives away who Tae Suk is, then at the succeeding scenes he was seen growing into a stong man who is determined to reach his goal and continue what he's doing. Same thing goes with Sun Hwa, she was a weak and vulnerable character in the beginning, but in the near end parts, she's seen evolving to a strong woman who won't let her husband do anything to her. One thing that I love about this movie is the development of the characters through the sequences of the parts. As the story progressed, Tae Suk meets an abused woman Sun Hwa (played by Lee Seung Yeon), then both of them experience a time of bliss going from house to house, until Tae Suk was accused of murder, and the lovers get separated for a few moments, leading the eccentric Tae Suk to his quest for invisiblity. Why invisibility? I think the only way for Tae Suk to be with Sun Hwa is through it. As the story continues, Tae Suk is seen being abused by officials and the officials being bribed by Min Kyu (Kwon Hyuk Ho). Another reason to love this movie, a touch of reality in the midst of eccentricity and sheer fantasy. It just showed how harsh and intense society is especially with people who don't follow the norm and be their own self. The story ends with Tae Suk playing together with Sun Hwa, in an empty house. Simple huh? not, the audience was left to think if everything that happened was just a dream or a reality (as written in the end sequence). I think everything that happened is reality except that Tae Suk became a ghost in the end (he may have died) or he has just perfected the art of invisibility. I will let you watch it in order to decide, it's definitely worth it.

Aside from the plot, the music is definitely an element that made this movie. The music drew the movie more to my heart because it made me experience the passion that Tae Suk and Sun Hwa had with each other. The music really gave me chills with watching the scenes between Tae Suk and Sun Hwa and other scenes that could have been impactless if left alone.

The cast:

This movie has one of the best cast that I've encountered in my years of watching films. Jae Hee is totally brilliant. This movie sealed his fate in my books as one of the best, if not the best, korean actors that I've ever seen. His character really brought out an eccentric vibe once I laid my eyes on him. His eyes were so intense and expressive that my mind could blurt out lines just seeing his eyes move. His anger and his happiness was expressed so beautifully that I felt I was seeing some sort of painting move. There was one scene in particular that gave me the chills because of his expressions. When his character was imprisoned, he was shirtless (I just love seeing him shirtless :p) and trying to achieve his goal. The way he faintly smiled and performed his arts really made me think that he is Tae Suk, so focused on what he wants to achieve and confined in his own world. Another scene was when he first saw Min Kyu abusing Sun Hwa and he hit Min Kyu with the golf balls. His eyes there, they way those looked down and looked up with sharpness were totally angry and mad with what happened. His dramatic scenes never failed me too. When he cried on one part, it was different from his crying scenes form DGCH or AOF where both were cries of sadness and fear, his cry in that particular scene was that of disappointment and subtle compared to those mentioned which gave the viewers a clearer idea that Tae Suk has a soft part inside beyond the quietly confident eccentric man on the outside .I was totally drawn and blown away to his character. Lee Seung Yeon is also brilliant in this movie. The way she looked so pitiful and sad. The way she gave life to the bruises that she got. Even with a few lines and first glance at this woman, she impressed me. The way she slowly showed how her character grew is truly impressive. The way her eyes looked when her character slapped her husband is truly intense, compared to the way her eyes looked when she was hit, looking down without strenght and confidence. With her and Jae Hee combined, the chemistry is definitely a hit for me. Both of their characters exuded passion and love that I'm sure the audience would feel. It's on a different level in the movie. Their scenes together particularly the kissing scenes made me melt in heat because the vibe is there and they don't looked faked. For an younger guy and older woman, I'm also impressed. Behind the two leads is of course the supporting cast who did a very good job in giving this movie the artistic touch and the life it had. Kwok Hyuk Ho was really agressive and hateful in the movie with the way he woud hit his wife and immedietely say sorry or how he hit Tae Suk with golf balls. Everyone did their part well...

Overall, this is a great movie, not for the faint hearted or easily bored, but for those who just want to think and see something good. My rating A+++ for the exotic dish this movie offers Smile

The love wind blew in my mind
giving me (as a gift) my love's (the loved person) greetings

telling me, come back, my precious.
the parting is so long though you are close

my self is the one who run away
saying my aim is very difficult

she looked from her high tower
and said, your words are strange/weird

come back, love, I have nothing but you in this life
you are my love but it's not possible to be mine

O' love

come back, love, I have nothing but you in this life
you are my love but it's not possible to be mine

Oh, Why?!!
